New facility secures NDT training in Scotland

The opening of a new training school near Rosyth in July secures availability of courses in Scotland in key skills including Magnetic Particle Inspection, Radiographic Interpretation, Weld Inspection, Liquid Penetrant, Visual and Ultrasonic testing.

Non destructive testing training in the area had been threatened in 2020 when Covid-19 related problems forced Fife College to stop offering the courses it had provided for 20 years. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) stepped in, rebadging training provision as IMechE Fife NDT.

Highly experienced staff from Fife College were retained and IMechE has expanded the training provision to include advanced NDT methods such as Eddy Current, Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing and Time of Flight Diffraction, said to be currently not available elsewhere in Scotland. Target markets include industries vital to the Scottish economy including oil and gas, nuclear, renewable energy, power, defence, aerospace, automotive, plant integrity and marine.

Level 3 Services and employer-based training are also offered, as well as examinations and consultancy services.

IMechE Fife NDT will be fully supported by market leaders IMechE Argyll Ruane, based in Sheffield, and will benefit from access to their extensive resources, including Level 3 Services, advanced UT tutors and best-in-class training material. The facility has been fully refurbished with modern classrooms and facilities for students, who will be trained using excellent equipment and an extensive range of training and exam samples.

IMechE Fife NDT is headed by Training Manager Peter McPherson, who has 20 years experience of training NDT technicians. Peter is supported by Graeme Innes whose lengthy experience in NDT training includes seven years at Fife College, and Stewart Gray who has six years training experience in a range of methods.

IMechE Fife NDT is based to the south of Dunfermline. There are a range of hotels nearby and the training school is easily accessible from the M90 motorway or from Rosyth railway station.
