Digital experiment service allows viability of monitoring solutions to be tested

A new service designed to test and check the viability of potential internet of things schemes without the upfront costs and risk has been announced by industrial computing specialist Adlink Technology.

Full IoT solutions conventionally require significant upfront investment. However, according to industry studies, the success rate for such projects is only 26%.

Adlink’s DXS digital experiments as-a-service offering provides all the resources needed to get digital experiments set up, including pre-validated hardware, asset connections, data movement consolidation, and field and professional services.

“ADLINK DXS IoT digital experiments as-a-service allows organisations to think big, start small and work fast when integrating IoT-based functionality within new business models or processes,” said Andy Penfold, director of offering management, ADLINK IoT Solutions and Technology. “As successful digital experiments are completed, stakeholder confidence grows, supporting the investment needed for large-scale rollouts,” he added.. “But unsuccessful experiments can also provide significant value, whether uncovering design issues or revealing where to avoid further investment.”

DXS IoT experiments were beta tested prior to the global launch including at the company’s own manufacturing plant in China. In 2016 an air compressor failure led to a loss in production that was difficult to detect and solve because of the location of the compressor. Adlink ran its own DXS IoT experiment and introduced a real time monitoring solution that sent data on all its compressors to the cloud. The data could then be presented as a dashboard. The following year, the monitoring twice detected conditions that could have led to catastrophic failure – these were addressed before any disruption to production occurred, saving an estimated $2.6m in downtime.

A current experiment is for a company that provides generators. The application has 900 generators being used in a critical environment, which currently demand a maintenance team of more than 200 engineers to monitor and service them. The DXS IoT experiment has fitted three generators with sensors which will send alerts to engineers should the compressors develop a condition which needs attention, with clear efficiency benefits for the business.
